Hello everyone. I just purchased an 04 base TL with 90k miles on it. This is the second TL in my garage. I also own a 09 SH-AWD TL (one is for me and the other for the wife).
I've spent the last two days reading all kinds of threads related to 3G TL maintenance. I understand the 04 TLs have a weak transmissions that should be frequently serviced (i.e. frequent fluid changes, replacement of pressure switches, filter etc).
I've also read a number of threads regarding the installation of transmission oil coolers. I've come across many conflicting opinions on the subject. So I apologize if I am starting a subject that has already been discussed before but I have a couple of questions:
The 04 TL will be driven to work and back approximately 40 minutes each way. It will be mostly highway but about 20 minutes of the commute will be spent in heavy traffic.
I live in Toronto, Canada so there is a huge seasonal temperature fluctuation here. For example, it was -20 F for many days in the winter and it is now closer to 85 F.
So would you recommend that I install a transmission cooler? Or alternatively, should I just focus on doing frequent ATF changes?
