Hesitates and then drops hard into 1st at stops

Earlier this year I tried fixing my slight 2nd to 3rd slip by cleaning the solenoid, but it didn't work. Now that it is colder out, I've noticed another problem that only occurs until the car warms up (about a mile of driving).

When the car is cold and I come to a complete stop, it hangs in neutral for about 2-3 seconds and then slams hard into first gear. Feels like I hit something or something hit me. Similar to my slipping, once the car has gotten to operating temperature, the problem completely goes away.

I've done some googling and found a few forums for other cars that say it could be related to the torque converter. Others (mostly BMW) say it could be fixed with a TCU software update. Could it be either of those? I'm planning on having to get my transmission rebuilt in the spring, assuming it makes it that long, but is there anything I can do until I reach that last resort? I only just hit 77k miles. It drove just fine when it was 85 degrees this summer after I bought it, but colder weather has begun to unveil a slew of transmission problems.
